We will begin our trip in September 2023 in Santiago, the capital of Chile.
There, we will collect our new motorhome, in the airport long-term car parking! The previous French owners will leave it there for us when they finish their own trip in South America. As they will depart 6 weeks before we arrive, we are hoping that the vehicle will still be standing when we arrive!
We have a grand total of 2 nights prior experience driving and living in a motorhome. We are very much hoping that our Easter trip to Northern Ireland will fully prepare us for an extended trip in Latin America, with it’s laid-back drivers, perfect roads and tiny altitudes…!
After our arrival in Santiago, we hope to explore the southern half of Chile, all the way down to iconic Tierra del Fuego. From there, we plan to cross into Argentina and enjoy all that the world’s 8th largest country has to offer.
Next we will cross into Uruguary, South America’s 2nd smallest country. Being about 2.5 times the size of Ireland, there should still be plenty to explore! Brazil will be next, as we skirt the south-west of this giant to reach the incredible Iguazu Falls.
The less-visited Paraguay will be our next stop, as we briefly traverse this landlocked nation from Cuidad del Este to Asuncion. After then completing our circuit of Argentina in the north of the country, we will enter Bolivia, a land of many mountains, much jungle, and 2 capital cities.
The beauty of Peru will then be explored. Being in the top 20 largest countries in the world, and containing Machu Picchu and the Amazon River & Rainforest (to name just a few attractions), we predict this will be slightly more than a fleeting visit!
Ecuador (meaning Equator) will be our next port of call. A country of mountains, volcanoes, coast and wildlife, this promises to be anything but dull! Our last stop in South America will then be beautiful Colombia. An incredibly diverse country, both in terms of ethnicity and biodiversity, we hope to enjoy the Pacific and Carribean coasts, the mountains, the cities, and everything in between.
While the above is all clear-as-day on (e)paper, we all know that the best laid plans are always likely to change. We intend to go with the flow during our adventure, seeing where the world takes us, adding or removing stops as we go.
This may result in a more prolonged stay in Chile, or an unplanned detour to Venezuela. Or perhaps even a continuation past the Darian Gap and into Central America…!
Join us for a family adventure with a twist…
